In 1998, a year after she came to the US from Mexico, Lety McCloud started her cleaning business by cleaning the grandparent’s home of a Hispanic Outreach Program volunteer at the Western Avenue Community Center.
Another member of the grandparent’s family, a local quality-home builder, hired Lety to clean his newly constructed homes. Some of the purchasers of those new homes were so impressed with how clean the home was that they asked the contractor for the name of the cleaning company.
Until mid 2006, Lety worked alone. The company name, established in 2000, came about because customers referred to her as a cleaning machine and, as one put it, “she is like an organic machine”; hence the Organic Cleaning Machine.
By 2006, the customer referrals had Lety doing two homes a day, six days a week - in addition to taking classes at Heartland Community College and at Illinois State University towards a Bachelor’s degree and raising two children. It was time to get some help.
Training people to be as meticulous as she is, while working as fast as she does is not easy; the turn-over rate is extremely high. Over time Lety has trained several crews to do things her way. Still she checks every home and business, the white glove test, to assure her standards are met. Perfection is an elusive goal, but our customers feel we are much closer to perfection than any of the other services.
Mid 2008 brought about another change – formalizing the business as The Organic Cleaning Machine, Inc. Only the backroom stuff has changed, that’s the part Lety did not like. It is now given to professionals. She can now pursue her passion, making things clean for people.
